Art 1 Final Portfolio

1.    Which project was your favorite or most successful this semester? Please explain.

Art is a creative concept that requires many steps that take a lot of time and need to be followed carefully. For me, it was challenging to create a very successful piece of art. My best piece, out of all of the projects, was my print of a sea turtle, as shown above. This piece required a lot of detail and thought which I think paid off. It took me a while to find the right colors that were in harmony and looked good with the print. This was my favorite project because the contrasting texture of the coral provided emphasis on the sea turtle. I really enjoyed this print making project because it reminded me of my childhood using little stamps. This print making assignment was a little different than the rest of our projects because you could not incorporate any value.

2.    Regardless of whether you liked or disliked a project, which one did you learn, grow, or developed the most from? Please explain.

The project that I really disliked was also the one that actually taught me the most. This was the contour  line shoe drawing assignment. It involved hand-eye coordination and it included keeping objects in proportion. For this project, we were not allowed to lift up the pen while we were drawing the shoe. This was a really challenging for me. Using this technique, I learned to visualize objects slowly which helped coordinate my hand with my sketches. After the contour shoe drawing assignment, we had to draw an object that has value; I probably would not have done so well without the help of this exercise.

3.    Choose 1 piece of Art that you used skills and techniques learned from previous projects. Discuss your growth as an artist and how you incorporated these skills and techniques to create the piece.

After joining this class, I figured out that there are a lot of different techniques that can help you throughout art. 1 of these techniques I learned is incorporating value into my drawings. I had learned this skill from my 3 object value sketch. Using this method really helped me with my drawing of my car. I thought, the result of my car drawing turned out really good. With value you can create many different pieces. I used these value skills with my car drawing, my IPad value project, my landscape painting, and my clay tile. I would say that I have increased my artistic ability since I have taken this class.

4.    Which project do you feel was the least important in learning the concepts taught in this course? Please explain.

I thought that all the projects we had were fun and creative. Although, I felt that the spray paint stencil project was not necessary for learning. This project did not really teach me anything nor did it help me with any other assignments. The worst part of the assignment was the smell of the spray paint would just get to your head. Also the cutting of the stencil took the most amount of time which was to time consuming. I did like how we got to choose the colors of the spray paint. I ended up choosing pink, purple, and yellow as you can see above. I thought it was interesting to have one primary, one secondary, and one tertiary color.

5.    Choose a piece or artwork where the subject matter reflects you as an artist. One that you have a personal connection to. Please explain your choice.

Out of all my art pieces, there was one that just reflected me and that was my clay tile. My clay tile was of a lotus flower (shown above). I thought it was a unique and beautiful flower to use. The lotus flower really reflected me because it is India’s national flower. My parents grew up in India, and I thought it would be nice if I made something related to my heritage. The lotus flower symbolizes long life, good fortune, and honor, which is something that I thought would be cool to create through clay. The result of my lotus flower, I thought, turned out to be good because the colors all blended in well. I tried to give the petals of the lotus flowers some value and it gave it some depth.
